Comments:Activity between 0715 and 1513 was relatively quiet. A lot of angled surging out of North Vent and some small vertical surges out of South. At 803, 935, 1342, and 1421 we observed slightly larger bursting from North and South Vents, but not really sustained. 1513 was the start of increased activity that preceded the eruption. Surges from North Vent were more massive with concerted vertical surging from South. Babbling brook runoff observed twice before the eruption start, at approximately 1516 and at 1520. At 1521 surging from North Vent got progressively stronger with only a few seconds of quiet in between bursts. At 1522 North Vent started thick vertical surging that climbed to above the height of the trees and threw a rock. The water continued to climb and South Vent joined in for the start of the eruption. The eruption was extremely loud from the start, and by the 3 minute mark North Vent was in strong steam phase. South Vent switched back and forth between water and steam. Water from South was observed at 1530 but it was in steam at 1544. Suboptimal viewing conditions made it difficult to determine the height and the total duration of the water phase. Shifting winds blew the water toward both viewing platforms and kept the north slope above Steamboat relatively dry. The eruption threw many rocks, but the vents never turned dirty. New runoff channels are forming near steerage. Much debris was on the boardwalk below Steamboat.
