Vixen got very quiet shortly after the last eruption ended. no gurgling/bubbling sounds and no water observed in the vent. 1408 water visable in the tube but only an occational bubble that comes to the surface. 1415 more frequent bubbles breaking the surface but pool is low (4") in the vent. Arduously slow refill! Pool comes up a few inches and drops one inch - up and inch, down a half; repeats. 1510 pool has filled the smooth area and is beginning to filter into the rocky features on the south edge, very few bubbles breaking the surface. 1542 *yawn-stretch=more-smarties* @1600 pool has SLOWLY come up to the smaller "rocks" on the south end of the platform. A few random bubbles that break the surface and some convection waves. Who will win this wait? |

Note: This logger is on MST rather than MDT.
Over the past 48 hours, several almost eruption-like spikes have been appearing. I've been suspecting this logger to log some, if not all, Vixen eruptions for a while now, but until now this for me has been some 'wishful thinking'.
Given DanS' 1030-1112 MDT note, saying "Erupted sometime this morning. Runoff channels wet (...)", this'd most likely line up with the three spikes on this logger between ~0700 and 0900 MST.
DanS' 1310 MDT note, saying "Erupted again between 1112-1310.", would line up with the spikes between ~1030 and 1200 MST. |

Vixen is nearly imperceptibly filling; upon arrival on a 10 minute cycle, thence to a 20 minute cycle. Over 5 hours water would slowly rise, then ebb, but gradually rising. 1115 it was at the inner circle, by 1600 just into the 2nd beach. The rises may have a little visible convection, or subtle palpitating. Very interesting. I think it's about .5 inch per hour, if that. |

Making this a Note so it will be easier to find than buried in the data. While standing up looking directly into the vent, in flat light, at 30 seconds into the eruption I clearly saw the white of a large steam bubble rising, when suddenly it disappeared, looking like a balloon being sucked back down the hole. I heard the pop and saw the water level change. I never thought you could "see" an implosion, but that's as close as I have come. |

Can move this to Other if prompted. Last Friday I noticed hot steamy ground just to the south of the sinkhole across the boardwalk from Vixen, on a cold rainy day. Today it was still steaming on a warm day, with dark discoloration. My heat gun read 80C on that spot! Moving it away from the dark area the temp quickly changed to 26C, and I checked and re-checked. A Hot Spot - wait for a new sinkhole to appear... soon? |

Vixen on Steroids, post disturbance, continues. Either my shock over this behavior wore off, or today I noticed more splashy play, or it is changing again. First bursts and short durations are still very tall. Later in the longer eruptions things get a bit more chaotic, particularly after a pause. Many pauses happen around the 30 second mark. Pool level this afternoon seemed lower, and some parts of the eruption look like the "fiber optic christmas tree" similar to the low-water-mostly- steam eruptions witnessed by Clark, DaveM, Kathy F Mike F and myself May 2014. I was wondering if some of those low pool moments would switch to that behavior. Upon arrival the runoff channel west (to sinkhole across the boardwalk) was wet, but I saw no runoff that way on my longest duration of just under 4 minutes. |

Big changes at Vixen, post disturbance! Friday's intervals were shorter, but I didn't stay long. Saturday Nick V observed the same. Sunday, the change, as seen by Nick Sunday, and myself today, Monday. These are full bodied tall eruptions!! The water level in the pool is lower at eruption, with very little runoff except in the longer durations. I saw no runoff heading towards the west sinkhole under the boardwalk, and the formation on the south side is drying out. The DRAIN noise is back! I barely had time to write down duration, enjoy the loud drain sound and reset the timer on my watch before it is Game On with another quick fill right after the drain ends. Wow, what a change! The sinkhole that is in line between Vixen and Corporal that had water on opening weekend, and held water all summer is drained. The sluggish drain began with my first observations in April... coincidence that the sinkhole drained and Vixen behaves this way? Related to the new large sinkhole to the south? Who knows. |

Vixen Geyser eruptions result in runoff radiating away in four directions: 1) to the SW, emptying into a drain on the western side of the boardwalk (I observed this drain receiving runoff in 2013, but not in 2014; it is receiving runoff in May 2015); 2) to the E, emptying into a moderately large crater; 3) to the NW, then running northward and northeastward along the boardwalk and emptying into Tantalus Creek; 4) to the NE, emptying into Tantalus Creek. |

Lots of juvenile geyserite at & around Vixen Geyser since I last observed the site in August 2014. Finely tuberculose geyserite covers the large broken blocks that rim the central crater. In shallow splash pools around the ring of broken blocks, former loose geyserite gravel now has moderately smooth coatings of geyserite (= incipient geyser beads, maybe?) - some have been cemented together. Delicate geyserite terracettes are present in some of the proximal to near-proximal runoff channels. |

08/07/1985 Vixen Geyser = Vixen Geyser has been having about 1 and a half hour intervals (1 ½) – plus or minus 5 to 10 minutes on either side. The eruptions are mostly little over or a little under a minute long. The height normally is 10 to 15 feet w/an occasional burst up to 20 feet or so. In the eruptions I saw this summer did see 1 or 2 bursts that looked like it could have reached 25 feet – but was very, very few.

1050am Woo Man, change @ Norris - 2 visitors reported... this am that a hole was in the middle of the trail between Pearl & Vixen. A steaming hole. ...went and moved the trail & investigated. Its a steaming hole alright ~ 1 foot diameter. It looks like it just fell in – the ground is ~8” thick and below that is a cavern to a depth fo perhaps 2-3’. The Cavern extends (as far as we could see) ~ 3-4’ back under the ground to the north. Wow!
AM GBW went to look @ The New Hole* + while we were there Vixen erupted 4 times in a space of 10 minutes 6-10’ high. Each eruption lasted ~2minutes. Pretty neat.

7/24/1984 In between majors, Vixen had minor eruptions every few seconds to minutes. Among these were “minor-majors” which were short but higher (6-8 ft) and had a very distinct drain sound following.
As time for the major neared, there was more gurgling and splashing (very low), making it hard to tell beginnings & ends, if there were such.
There were 20 “minor-majors” in between the two eruptions. The last (weak) one was around 13 min before the major. |

03/25/1978 NOTE Vixen – could hear sloshing & draining, but it never actually erupted. Discovered 3 pennies & one dime near the vent – all 3 pennies had the face & back “dissolved” away, the dime was in slightly better shape. Vixen – 206º |
